design your own tote bag online: from idea to handmade bag

By Nina Karisik, founder of MadeAptPublished September 2026

The short answer

A tote bag is the easiest way to try custom-made. No measurements, no fittings, no sizing risk — just your design, your fabric choice, and a maker who sews it properly. Here’s how designing a tote online actually works, and what to think about before you start.

Why start with a tote?

Most people who want something custom-made begin with a garment, then hesitate at the measurement step. A tote skips that entirely. It’s a flat, forgiving object, which means:

  • No fit risk. The single biggest source of problems in made-to-measure is measurement error. A bag has none.
  • Lower cost of entry. You get the full experience — designing, choosing fabric, receiving something made by hand for you — at a fraction of a garment’s price.
  • Fast turnaround. Simple construction means your maker can cut and sew a tote quickly compared to a dress or tailored piece.

It’s also a genuinely useful object. A well-made canvas or linen tote outlasts dozens of the giveaway bags accumulating in your cupboard.

Designing your tote online

You don’t need design software or drawing skills. In the MadeApt design studio you can:

  1. Start from a shape. Standard tote, deep market bag, slim laptop-friendly carrier — pick the silhouette that matches how you’ll use it.
  2. Choose your dimensions. Want it to fit an A4 sketchbook? A 13-inch laptop? Groceries? Tell us the use and we’ll confirm the dimensions work before anything is cut.
  3. Pick fabric and colour. Sturdy cotton canvas is the classic. Linen gives a softer, more relaxed look. Deadstock and remnant fabrics are often available if you want something one-of-a-kind with less waste.
  4. Add the details. Handle length (shoulder vs hand-carry), internal pocket, magnetic closure, lining or unlined, printed or embroidered artwork.

If you have artwork — your own illustration, a logo, a photo — you can upload it and see it placed on the bag before you commit.

What a maker checks before sewing

Every MadeApt order goes through quality checks before, during and after production. For a tote that means confirming your artwork will print or embroider cleanly at the size you’ve chosen, checking the fabric weight suits the bag’s intended load, and photographing the finished bag before it ships so you see exactly what you’re getting.

This is the difference between a custom tote and a print-on-demand one: a person who sews for a living looks at your design and tells you if something won’t work — before you’ve paid for it.

What does a custom tote cost?

Less than you’d expect, and more than a $5 promotional bag — because a maker is paid properly to cut, sew and finish it by hand. Final price depends on size, fabric, and details like lining, pockets and printed artwork. Request a quote with your design and you’ll get a firm price before committing to anything.

Ideas to get you started

  • The everyday carry: heavyweight canvas, long handles, one internal pocket, your initials embroidered small on the corner.
  • The market bag: deep gusset, unlined linen, natural colour, sized for a week’s veg.
  • The artist edition: your own artwork printed large on one face, plain reverse, contrast handles.
  • The gift tote: a friend’s favourite colour, a lining fabric that surprises them when they open it.
