Hilary Duff’s Material Girls slip dress, made to measure

By Nina Karisik, founder of MadeAptPublished 1 November 2026

The short answer

Yes, a dress from a film can be made to measure. This one was: the aqua satin slip from Material Girls (2006), drafted to my measurements by Choco and worn to Hilary Duff’s show at RAC Arena, Perth, on 29 October 2026. A satin slip like it is $259 USD in our catalogue, and most orders take about four weeks including shipping.

I wanted to wear something from one of her own films to the show, and the aqua slip from Material Girls was the one: simple enough to actually wear out, specific enough that anyone who knows the film would know.

Hilary Duff played RAC Arena in Perth on 29 October 2026. I had the dress made to measure by Choco, a tailor on MadeApt, and wore it with a dotted headband and a magenta scarf.

It did what I asked of it: through the queue, the floor and the walk back, and it photographed outside the arena exactly the colour it was in the studio.

The reference

The dress in the film is a slip: two thin straps, a soft gathered centre at the bust, no waist seam, and a hem that stops above the knee. The colour sits in the pale aqua family, somewhere between baby blue and turquoise, with the sheen of a satin. It is a 2000s underwear-as-outerwear dress, and in the film it is worn with a headband, which is why there is one in my photo too.

That is the whole brief: silhouette, length, colour family. Nothing about the film dress is a protected print or a logo, so there was nothing to steer around. We describe it in our own words and we don’t use stills from the film on this page; the pictures here are ours.

How Choco brought it to life

The short version: one photo, one set of measurements, one tailor. The longer version is below.

Pale aqua satin folded on a cutting table, raw edges showing, with a length of magenta fabric behind it
The satin and the magenta on Choco’s cutting table, before either was cut. Our photo.
  1. Measurements. Taken at home with the MadeApt slip-dress measurement guide, fifteen points, no appointment. Choco drafted the dress from those numbers rather than from a size.
  2. Fitting. No toile and no in-person fitting. A slip is a forgiving shape, so the dress went straight from the measurements to the cloth and was checked at the staged photo gates before it shipped.
  3. Fabric. Satin, because the dress in the film reads as satin and a slip needs a cloth that slips. The aqua was matched to the colour family of the scene, not to a screenshot, because screen colour has been lit and graded.
  4. What changed from the film, and why. One addition: the white lace at the hem, which the film dress does not have. The thin straps, the gathered centre at the bust and the above-the-knee length stay as they are on screen.

The clip above is Choco cutting the satin. The magenta scarf came from the same table, which is why the two were always going to be worn together.

The lace at the hem of the studio render is on the finished dress, just visible under the satin in the photo at the top. The scarf and the headband are styling, not part of the garment.

What to wear to a concert (and to a Hilary Duff show)

The practical part, from one arena night in a slip dress. The Lucky Me tour continues through February 2027, so there is time to plan.

Temperature

Arenas are cold while you queue, then warm once the floor fills. Dress for the second part and carry something for the first. A scarf did that job for me; a light jacket you can tie at the waist does it too.

Standing or seated

Check your ticket. Floor standing means three to four hours on your feet, so flats, low block heels or boots you have already worn in. Seated means more freedom, but you still walk a long way from the car park. A short dress on a seat is fine; a very short one is a negotiation.

Bag

Small and hands-free: a cross-body or wristlet for a phone, a card and lip balm. Most arenas limit bag size and search at the door, so read the venue’s bag policy before you leave.

Layers for Perth in October

Late October in Perth is spring: a warm afternoon becomes a cool evening by the time you walk out. Bare arms on the way in, a layer for the way out. The same goes for any outdoor queue on this tour.

2000s nostalgia without the costume

  • Pick one reference piece and keep the rest current. A slip, a headband or a butterfly clip, not all three.
  • Real fabric, real fit. A made-to-measure slip reads as a dress; costume-shop satin reads as a costume, from the next seat.
  • Colour over props. Take the film’s colour family. Nobody needs a face mask.

Want a dress from a film or a show made?

Bring a screenshot and say what the dress is for; a tailor reads the silhouette, length and colour and drafts a version to your measurements. The honest version of what translates and what gets reinterpreted is in how to get a dress made from a movie or TV show. If all you have is one image, start with can you get a dress made from a picture?

Frequently asked questions

Found your dress in a film? Bring the screenshot.

Send the still straight to a tailor for a quote, or open it in the studio first and adjust the length, colour or straps before you ask. Say what must stay and what can change, add your budget including shipping, your delivery country and the date if there is one. A real person replies with a quote and an estimated timeline, before any payment.
